VISA & KITAS

What is the difference between VISA & KITAS ?

In Indonesia, both visa and KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas or Limited Stay Permit Card) are related to the legal permission for foreigners to stay in the country.

VISA

A visa is an official endorsement on a passport that allows the holder to enter, stay, or leave a country for a specified period. In Indonesia, visas come in various types, each serving a different purpose. Common types include tourist visas, business visas, social visas, etc. A visa typically grants you entry into the country, but it does not necessarily allow you to stay for an extended period or work.

KITAS (Limited Stay Permit Card)

KITAS is a physical card issued to foreigners staying in Indonesia for a more extended period, often for work, business, or other specific purposes. It is obtained after entering Indonesia with the appropriate visa, and it serves as evidence of legal residence in the country. KITAS is typically valid for a specific duration, and holders are required to renew it before expiration if they wish to continue their stay. There are different categories of KITAS, such as work KITAS (for employment purposes), social KITAS (for those visiting family or friends), retirement KITAS (for retirees), spouse KITAS (stay permit for foreigners who are legally married to an Indonesian citizen), investor KITAS (foreign investors who want to establish or invest in business activities (PT PMA) in Indonesia).
